We are pleased to announce the 2020 Virtual Annual Mondale Award and Scholarship Gala. 

This 23rd Mondale Gala has been scheduled for  Friday, November 13th at 7:00 p.m.

Mondale Award 2020: William (Bill) Deef

Bill Deef is Senior VP of Public Affairs for Meet Minneapolis, the city convention and visitors association. During his decades of service, he chiefly marketed the region to domestic and international visitors. In 1989, Deef began promoting Minneapolis and Minnesota as travel destinations for Japanese business and leisure travelers.

Bill Deef served on JASM’s Board of Directors for 10 years (1994-2004) and as President (1999-2000). He was Chair of Gov.Ventura’s trade mission to Japan in 1999 and was recognized twice by Explore MN Tourism for efforts promoting Minnesota. He served as chair of the Airport Foundation MSP and represents the tourism industry on the Minnesota District Export Council. He leads the Minneapolis Global Partnership program, which invests in the city’s 12 sister-city relationships including Ibaraki City, Japan. 



Keynote Speaker: Noriko Sanefuji

Noriko Sanefuji is a Museum Specialist at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History (NMAH). Her areas of focus are Japanese American and Asian Pacific American history and culture. Over the past fifteen years, Sanefuji has worked on the preservation of Asian Pacific American history and culture, organizing public programs and the collection of artifacts. She is the co-curator of “Righting a Wrong: the Japanese American Experience in World War II” (2017) and its traveling SITES exhibition (2019); “Congressional Gold Medal awarded to the Japanese American Nisei Soldiers of World War II” (2014); Sweet and Sour: The Americanization of the Chinese Restaurant” (2010). Sanefuji has worked as a curator, researcher, educator program producer and docent coordinator. She has been producing the NMAH’s Day of Remembrance program for over ten years.


Mondale Scholarship Recipients 2020-2021 

Claire Restad is a junior at the University of St. Thomas studying international studies with minors in Japanese and data analytics. Claire will be spending her junior year at Osaka Gakuin University, taking courses focused on Japanese culture and language. She is very excited to go to her mother’s home country to learn more about her Japanese heritage and culture.


Lydia Rose is a senior at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities majoring in technical writing and communication and minoring in Asian and Middle Eastern studies. Next summer she plans to study at Osaka Gakuin University through the CET Japan program. She is so excited to completely immerse herself in Japanese language and culture, and wants to make lasting connections there, hopefully reconnecting with some friends along the way. 

JASM is very pleased to present the Mondale Award and Mondale Scholarship to the recipients in 2020. Everyone is welcome to join us to honor them.
